Having known from an early age that I didn’t fit a ‘norm’, I’ve not been one to overly hide who I am, but growing up gay was difficult in the 80’s and 90’s, and certainly being ‘out’ at work has been challenging, and came with various obvious and less obvious discrimination and psychological challenges. Up until recently I’ve not always ‘brought my whole self to work’. On joining Bravura I was determined that I would be unapologetically me – in spite of feeling uncomfortable at first – I was determined that I wasn’t going to be marginalised or made to feel ‘other’ or ‘less than’. When asked if I would be part of the D&I leadership team and lead our LGBT+ pillar, whilst initially daunting, I leapt at the chance.
I am determined that everyone should have the freedom to be themselves and comfortable. We now have a thriving and growing LGBT+ and allies network, bYou, open to all staff, and enables freedom of expression, unity, support and camaraderie – as well as some fun and educational social events. As a network we also ensure Bravura strives for the best possible diverse and inclusive corporate environment.
